Ahmet’s Musical Journey: From Piano Keys to the Stage

Ahmet was diagnosed with autism at the age of three. Like many parents, this was not the future I had imagined for my child. We began a long journey of research, education, and discovery. By the time Ahmet was six, he had already attended kindergarten and received special education, sensory integration, and sports training.
A Love for Music from the Start
Ahmet has always loved music. From an early age, he played with musical toys, pressing buttons in sequence to create melodies, then clapping with excitement. He was fascinated by a book with color-coded piano keys, enjoying how pressing each key produced a melody.
At almost seven, we decided to start piano lessons. Ahmet was very active, and at first half of each lesson was spent simply helping him stay focused. But then something incredible happened: his first piano teacher discovered that Ahmet hadabsolute pitch. This changed everything.
Discovering His Talent
As he began to give mini concerts and receive applause, Ahmet’s joy and motivation grew. He learned to read and write, loved exploring music on the computer, and always asked fororiginal CDsas birthday gifts—memorizing every detail of the track lists. He developed an impressive taste in music, enjoying rock and Anatolian rock bands, and we often attended concerts together.
At age ten, we noticed Ahmet keeping rhythm to every song he heard. We enrolled him in drum lessons, and he immediately took to it.
A Path to Professional Music
Ahmet passed the entrance exam for Ankara Fine Arts High School with third place honors. He studied drums while continuing piano, and joined an orchestra at Ankara University of Music and Fine Arts, made up mainly of young people with autism and some with visual impairments. They performed concerts across Türkiye—an extraordinary experience for him.
After high school, Ahmet took the university entrance exam and was accepted into thedrums departmentat Ankara University of Music and Fine Arts. This was a dream come true.
Looking Ahead
Ahmet still faces challenges in socializing, but his teachers and peers admire his musical talent. He has a clear daily routine, filled with purpose and joy. Our dream is for him to one day play drums in a professional orchestra.
There are many children and young people with autism who have musical talent. I hope they too can find support and a place in society through their music, just like Ahmet.
